How to choose crown moulding size for your room
Ceiling height is a useful starting point, but the right crown moulding also responds to room width, adjoining trim, and the architectural presence you want.

Compare wall drop and ceiling projection
Wall drop is how far the profile extends down the wall; ceiling projection is how far it reaches into the room. Two profiles with the same nominal size can look quite different. Compare installed dimensions and cross-sections as well as the size label.
All NovaCrown crown profiles are available in sizes from 4″ to 14″, in lengths up to 8 feet. Explore the profile collection and dimensioned cross-section catalogue.
Use ceiling height as a starting point
8-foot ceilings: begin by comparing the smaller end of the range. Check the clearance above door and window casings so the wall drop does not crowd the room.
9- to 10-foot ceilings: compare modest and substantial profiles in the actual room. Wide openings and generous room dimensions may support more presence than a small room at the same height.
11- to 12-foot ceilings and higher: consider stronger scale so the detail remains visible from normal viewing distance. Still check its relationship to doors, cabinetry, and adjoining rooms.
These are design starting points, not fixed sizing rules. Profile shape and room proportions should guide the final choice.
Choose the character of the ceiling edge
A flowing cove gives a different effect from crisp steps. Compare One Step Cove, Two Steps Cove, Georgian, Symmetrical, Cove, Milan, Tuscany, and Deco by their shape and the shadows they create. Look for a relationship with doors, baseboards, cabinetry, and other ceiling details.
Measure the clearances
Check above doors, windows, tall cabinets, built-ins, and curtain hardware. Note vents, lights, and changes in ceiling height. In connected rooms, consider whether the moulding continues through an opening or stops at a natural transition.
Test the scale before ordering
Use removable tape suitable for your finish to mark the approximate wall drop and ceiling projection at a corner. Step back to the room entrance and your normal seating positions. This shows the profile’s envelope, but not its curves or shadow. A physical sample, if available, provides a better impression.
